PixTeller Review 2020 Quick and Powerful Image and Animation Editor

It’s been a few days since our PixTeller Preview, so in today’s PixTeller Review we have tried it out and have used it to make this very cover and video introduction. Let’s see how it was and whether it met our expectations that we set during our preview: An easy-to-use image and video editor to allow us to quickly create images, videos and animations.

In our Video you can see me preparing the intro while using PixTeller for the first time, so it took me a bit longer than it would normally take, but at the same time it was useful to explore what this tool allows, and to check out its timeline.

PixTeller Frames it all around

As soon as we join PixTeller we have a very nice dashboard greeting us with the various possibilities, to quickly jump in.

PixTeller Dashboard

As soon as we choose anything, we can either begin from scratch or use one of the many templates to start with

PixTeller Templates

Once we’ve either selected a template to get started, or begin from scratch, we get to the PixTeller Editor

PixTeller Editor

Here we can easily add any image (no videos! yet), text and then manipulate as we wish. The available edit tools are good, to note is the drawing ones, with both a Line Tool and Pencil Tool.

There are a lot of Stock Images available, that’s also quite good. One thing to note here: We do not have access to the Templates as we are editing, so it seems we can’t just add more templates or part of them, once we get started with one. We would have to begin another image.

Once we are done with this part, it’s time to get to the animation. Press “Animate” and the interface will change accordingly.

PixTeller Animation Editor

Quite the change here! You can interact with the position at each frame, by just adding Instances on the timeline. It is very easy and makes for a neat experience.

By having a position at frame A and another at frame B, you decide how the animation will happen, from which direction and so on. PixTeller will move the object between those two positions on its own in a fluid manner.

You can also change shapes at various different frames, so as to have a changing shape at different times and places of your own choosing.

The way you can detail each change and the ease makes it for a stunning way to create quick videos that look great at the same time.

This is where I was hoping PixTeller had its strong point, and I was not disappointed: it was amazing to use.

My only issue was that the timeline only worked via these Instances, and I could not mass-select and mass-move or delete them, it had to be done one by one, not a great experience. However, that is a minor inconvenience that can be improved.

I have not seen a frame-by-frame timeline on these kinds of tools before, and it works well. It’s not as complete as a professional video editor timeline of course, but it’s also quite easier to use and animate objects with, so it fits its use case perfectly.

In the video you can see how it only took me minutes to make it. Once you’re done with your image, you can just Save & Render, and then you have a choice to get a MP4 video or a gif/webp that can loop.

It does take a while to Export, depending on your PC I believe. As far as I understand how PixTeller currently works, the encoding part is done via your hardware. In their roadmap they said they are working on moving that to their servers, but it’s not there yet.

PixTeller Review in Conclusion

While PixTeller is not as fleshed out as some other competitors on the Image Editor side (though it is very close to them!), its Animation Maker is a pure joy to use and, to my knowledge, unique on this kind of tools. That makes PixTeller a really great tool to use for short animations, covers and introductions, while giving it its own character and uniqueness, so as not to be confused for one of the many tools that do very similar things.

We hope to see continued updates as their roadmap announces, but even right now, I believe this is a great tool to have in our stacks.
